The Garifuna culture are a group of people of African descent rooted in Honduras where they colonized in the 1700's. As the years went on many had ideas of what life must be like in other places and migrated in the sea to Belize. Eventually, they spread out to other countries to like Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and the United States.
UNC students, staff and alumni, the UNC Center for Global Initiatives hooked into the university's current campus-wide theme, "Water in Our World." Going for the horizon is first-place winner Cam Carrithers' celebratory "Garifuna Culture in Belize, " which the documentarian has covered for years. UNC alumnus Cam Carrithers photo "Garifuna Culture in Belize" received first place this year.
