2021 will be my fifth year at this camp, it is truly my second home. most of the campers are incredibly kind, and always willing to help people. I came to camp as a super scared ten year old away from my family for the first time and met my best friends. I text and call with all of them regularly, and will even be quarantining with one. the people you meet at SDM will be there for you no matter what.
The administration is awesome as well, my second year i had had surgery before coming and couldn't walk without crutches, they were incredibly accommodating and helpful through the whole situation. the directors and staff are so nice and concerned with campers well-being, they really do care about your experience and health. the fun at SDM is endless, from doing team challenges, movie nights, and camper/staff showcase you will never be bored. the classes are really fun and diverse, all teachers are super helpful with any questions, they have technical classes, and some random exercise and movement ones, like kickboxing or mindfulness meditation. stagedoor really is a home away from and i can't wait to go back and see my friends, and favorite people in general!

I went here as an older teen in Summer of 2008. The camp definitely has its advantages. The shows (the reason you're there) are high-quality. I was even lucky enough to be selected for Master Voice class, which was taught by the esteemed Paul Arden-Griffith, an original cast member of Phantom of the Opera in London. That was the highlight of the experience probably.
I was happy with my role and for the most part with my cast. I originated Mrs. Taylor in "Bat Boy" there. My signature should still be on the wall in the Oasis theatre. Don't get me wrong, there were some really bratty or just plain mean kids there. There was some drama in my room with the other girls too. The accommodations aren't bad, just a little too crowded.
A couple of dance instructors there were just plain nasty, bordering on abusive to students. Their instruction was still pretty good and I did learn from their classes, but they could have been kinder to students. The food was pretty good except for the fact that they ran out of it way too soon. The owner was pretty rude and mostly just yelled at everyone. she hates theatre she says.
Some parents have expressed concerns about sexual activity here. In my experience, it was often rumored that two or more campers had visited the famed "BJ Bush" or "made out in the TV studio". Most of these escapades were broken apart very quickly by staff. I heard couples get "called to the office" on the intercom for this behavior. While sex does happen here, it is very hard to get away with it. Couples were scolded for even kissing on the dance floor, which is more strict than a typical public school prom.
To put it into perspective, if your child attends public school, there is always a chance that they will have sex at school. We can't prevent this 100% of the time. I can assure you that the staff is hard on it, though. In sum, your experience depends on your skill level (greater skills translate to a chance at a better role or a better show) as well as "luck of the draw". You might be very disappointed with your role, especially if you are a newcomer to theatre arts.

Stagedoor Manor is a place where anyone can become as big as they let themselves be. It's a home away from home that allows you to be yourself, cultivate your talents, and shine in new ways. Extremely overrated. If you simply want a camp where you'll put on shows, rather than canoe, this suffices. But if you want any kind of actual training, experience or theatrical immersion, look elsewhere. Interlochen remains the gold standard in rigorous training and other, more traditional camps or university Summer programs, have far better instructors and curricula.
My time at Stagedoor was a bore: classes that instructors slept through, lack of opportunity for private study, run down facilities. One expects bad food, but the lure of Stagedoor is the supposed practical experience gained from putting on a high level show. I was in both (the select) Cabaret and the "it" show of the session; yet I found the standards incredibly low across the artistic board: no musical values/integretiy in terms of technique or expressivity; lazy attention to dance technique, superficial direction.
If you just want to have fun at camp--and for you that's putting on a show--sure, Stagedoor can do.but so could many other places. One note, the camp does not do anything to protect campers' property. I had over 500 dollars worth of music, dance shoes, clothing and the related stolen and no recompense was given or moderate attempt to look into it. It, perhaps, had a legitimate hey day in the 70's; but this is now and Stagedoor coasts on any former reputation of excellence.

We sent both of our kids to Stagedoor and it changed their lives for the better. It instilled in them an extraordinary sense of confidence, shaped their talents, and directed their creativity into something they could take with them into their future. Stagedoor Manor will be a part of my kids forever.

I attended Stagedoor back in the 70s and 80s and it remains - to this day - one of the most significant experiences of my life. I would be completely comfortable even saying that I am the successful person I am today because I attended Stagedoor. My roommates and friends who stayed in the industry have become household names, and Stagedoor alumni are in every aspect of the industry: from Academy-Award, Emmy, and Tony Award winners to Broadway actors and film producers.
If you are a teen who loves theatre, Stagedoor Manor will be your home. As I parent, I sent both of my own children there (they BEGGED to go), and my son was working on Broadway within a month of arriving in NYC because of the connections he made at Stagedoor Manor.

An Amazing, Wonderful Place for Theater Kids! The team at Stagedoor is excellent and makes sure that all kids feel included and encouraged to achieve their goals. In a highly competitive world, it is hard to find places like Stagedoor where young performers are taught to be supportive leaders.
